Snow in Arlington

The big “blizzard” of December 2009 hit us yesterday of course trapping us inside our house for most of the day. The local news provided much entertainment though from measuring snow drifts with dollar bills to stealing people’s shovels and our top notch weatherman, Doug Hill phoning it in from his living room. Just goes to show you how much a southern city DC really is.

Kate and I did manage to get out a little later in the day, with me being sick and cabin fever sitting in we headed up to Clarendon to see what was open.  The metro by that point was only operating underground so we were able to take it from Ballston to Clarendon.  They were single tracking with I believe one or two trains, all of the other trains were being stored underground for the Monday back to work.

Here are some photos from our journey.

And we took some videos as well.  Here we’re just venturing outside our place, it’s about 12″ of snow on the ground in most places.

We then walked up through Clarendon where they were shoveling out the snow with dump truck and excavators.

We dropped into Restaurant 3 which was open and serving people for a pulled duck sandwich and salad.  You really can determine whether your chef is local or not during a snow storm in DC.  After dinner we walked back from Clarendon to Ballston and enjoyed the snow.

Teddy Roosevelt Island

It was such a nice day today that Kate and I decided to get out of the house.  The museums were in transition and we had seen most of the memorials on the Mall, but neither of us had gone to Theodore Roosevelt Island.

It was quite impressive, an easy walk from Rosslyn down the Curtis Trail.  The Memorial at the top of the island was much larger than I expected and the trails around the island were great for jogging or hiking.
